The Intern Phenomena
So, does anybody else have this problem?
It seems that whenever I meet people (most commonly members of the opposite sex) and they ask me what I do for a living and I respond with "I work for a campus ministry"...it seems to put a sudden stop to all conversation. Most often I get an "Oh...ok" response or even better is when I get the "Oh, I go to church once in a while" comment. Anyway, I'm beginning to dread this question in conversations because I know that it will put an end to any further dialogue. Who ever knew I could be such a conversation stopper...

The question that I get more than anything else is somewhere along the lines of, "So, are you through with class for the day?"
Amen to all of the above. Most people give me the fake "Oh that's great." response when I tell them I work for a campus ministry and one student asked, "How do you have time for class, work, and being an intern?"
sj, it's not that people want to stop talking to you. it's just that the longer they look at your lovely eyes and have you engage them in brilliant and witty conversation, they find themselves falling in love...and that scares them they they could fall so hard so fast.
p.s. welcome back to the blog, neal. i was starting to worry.
SJ - I agree with Char; you are dazzling! I get the all the above along with the puzzled "...so, what DO you do?" But, I think my favorite was "Oh, are you a refugee?" My guess: W&L being so small, and with me being clearly new, but older than a freshie, refugee was the only way to go.
Yeah, my career is never a good topic of conversation... you are definitely not alone...
