Here's an exciting story for y'all...
Last night, I was mugged on the streets of Peru. A group of interns decided to go out for pizza. We took a taxi to the restaurant and as we were standing around paying the driver I suddenly felt a yank on my purse. Within half a second, I knew what was happening to me. I turned around to grab my purse back, yelled "Dammit!" at the top of my lungs and began chasing the guy. I nearly caught him when the thought occurred to me "What the hell am I going to do if I catch this guy?" So I gave up for fear of being retaliated against and turned around defeated. The whole situation cost me my driver's license, credit cards, $400 camera, and 50 soles ($15 US dollars).
So, today, in an attempt to get my camera back, I drove with 3 Peruvian men to the black market. We were not allowed to get out of the car and I had to lock my door. We pulled up, the market guard came and talked to us in a very mafiaish manner. He had a large whip tucked in the back of his pants. Much discussion occurred and phone numbers were exchanged. I was told I would receive a call later when my camera was found. Upon receiving a phone call, the price for my camera will be negotiated, and I will buy my camera back...
hopefully.
In the meantime, feel free to start a "camera for SJ" fund...
